Patrick Rothfuss - A Wise Man's Fears

Series: The Kingkiller Chronicle #2

Author: Patrick Rothfuss

The hero continues his difficult life path. Until a certain time, everything was going well for him. But suddenly the conflict within the school grew into something more. Despite the fact that all students are “equal,” some are the offspring of noble families, and some are orphans and born artists. And the former, of course, have the opportunity to greatly harm the latter. Faced with human meanness and vindictiveness, the hero is forced to leave school for a while. Now he has knowledge, he has talent. And he decides to find himself a patron who could protect him from arbitrariness, and at the same time help him in his search.

The hero, who previously lived in fairly “hothouse” conditions, is faced with human meanness, tries to win the trust of a high-ranking person and even succeeds in this. But for this he has to face robbers and even kill with the help of his abilities, which he had never even thought about before.

In addition, another facet of the world suddenly opens up. There is a legend among the people about fairies who lure people to their kingdom, from where they never return. And the hero once again discovers that not everything in human fairy tales is fiction. And he has to “stay” in the mysterious other world, even though he was able to return from there.

And of course, the hero, who had just entered his youth, could not help but be touched by love. Only his chosen one is a match for him - elusive, unpredictable and primarily solving her own problems. Moreover, the girl fully understands what she wants from life, but there is no place for the hero in these plans.

Well, despite the adventures, the hero is little by little moving towards his goal. He piece by piece collects knowledge about his mysterious enemies who killed his family. Moreover, the traces lead to the distant past, when battles of magicians thundered and the fate of nations was decided. Only now he finds more and more traces of the activities of mysterious entities in the present. And this means that not everything is so simple, and half-forgotten legends become a terrible reality.

The world continues to open up. If the first book mainly described the hero’s training, then here he already begins to travel around the world, getting acquainted with the powerful of this world (and not only this, but also the other world). Of course, the romantic line causes some surprise. A hero who has a goal in life and purposefully achieves everything turns out to be completely defenseless against mental torment. Although, given his age and limited life experience, this is not surprising. And if the hero gradually advances in his endeavors, then on the love front he suffers defeat.

Less training, more adventure and action

The world reveals itself from other, mysterious sides

Somewhat strange development of the love line with the “femme fatale”
