Borisov Oleg – "Doc"

This is a military science fiction novel that offers a rare perspective on war. It follows the story of soldiers who are part of a penal battalion, comprised of the most marginalized members of society, who are sent on the most dangerous missions. Betrayal and deceit are commonplace among the high command and politicians, but despite this, the soldiers must fulfill their duty at all costs. The main character is a field doctor whose primary task is to save as many lives as possible.

The novel portrays war as far from the romanticized idea of it. There are no clear-cut notions of right or wrong, only a sense of duty that must be fulfilled, even if one's own command has betrayed them. The narrative is quite somber, but this only adds to its realism. The book is not recommended for fans of heroic fantasy, as it is more akin to a documentary war chronicle, albeit set in a fantastical world. For everyone else, it is a must-read.
