Enwe Martin – The brightest stars

A space opera about the settlement of humanity and the formation of new states. It so happened that humanity was able to reach the stars and even populate other star systems. But then the expansion stopped. Moreover, for a banal reason - the main capacities and most of humanity will remain in the mother system. And the farther from it, the fewer opportunities, the worse the standard of living, the less financial opportunities. Accordingly, people do not want to fly to the “province,” and without motivation, further expansion is pointless.

The main reason for subsequent events turned out to be ordinary - the struggle for power. In the “cradle” of humanity, everything has long been divided between political clans. And one of these clans finds itself in a hopeless situation where all its actions lead to political defeat. A beautiful solution was found - not to fight for power in a state without a chance of success, but to form your own. And although separatist sentiments usually do not contribute to the development of the state, in this case they only benefit humanity. After all, the most active part of people leaves the “cradle” and prospects for further development immediately open up

Separately, we can highlight the non-standard concept of interstellar travel. Here space is presented in the form of an “ocean” in which “islands” of star systems are scattered. And between them is not a vacuum at all - but hyperspace, in which either objects the size of a planet can exist, or ships with appropriate protection, without which they will face inevitable destruction. The analogue with the marine theme can be seen throughout. Ship classes have names that match the names of sailing ships. The speed of movement in hyperspace depends on the number of “sails”, and between the stars there is even an analogue of “wind”. Even the number of weapons is counted in “cannons,” although they have gone far from their ancestors.

The world and its technologies are very well developed, and quite plausible, if, of course, we accept the concept of a cosmic “ocean”. And space battles are not shown in the form of laser fire at ridiculous distances in the spirit of Star Wars. Here, cuttings can last for days and naked mathematics rules here. The only thing that can confuse an unprepared reader is unusual abbreviations of terms and measures, although they are tied to those familiar to us.

There is more than one plot line and tells about the beginning of the “relocation” both from the point of view of ordinary people and those who actually started it. There is a place for both the fight against space pirates and the behind-the-scenes intrigues of the political elite of humanity. And of course, not everything is as simple as it seems at first glance. Moreover, the narrative is periodically interrupted by historical and technical digressions, which tell the history of the emergence of the Confederation and explain the main national and technical features of the future world.

The concept of an “interstellar ocean” with shoals, islands and wind is different from the usual jumps through hyperspace

Spaceships here are really “ships” (more precisely, submarines) - with sails, “guns” and “immersion depth”
