Several new characters appear in the book, plus minor characters from previous books come to the fore. After all, they also have their secrets, and the past is fraught with many surprises.

The plot is traditionally built on unraveling a web of events that are aimed at goals unknown to the reader and the characters of the book. At the same time, there is a confrontation between the criminal world and law enforcement agencies. The precarious balance, when criminals have the opportunity to escape justice thanks to a patron of high magicians, was shaken with the death of the latter. Moreover, the underworld has received a new leader who restores order as quickly and ruthlessly as possible and achieves unquestioning obedience. And local security forces are creating a structure completely independent from the state so that the patronage of officials ceases to influence justice. But everything traditionally turns out to be much more complicated, and an attempt to destroy the elusive killer leads to unpredictable consequences.

Of course, the idea of a completely independent law enforcement system from the state looks attractive. But in reality, it is unlikely that those in power would allow such a structure to form. And she certainly would not be able to gain complete financial and political independence - control over her promises too enormous opportunities. In fact, we get a state within a state, and while some have only economic leverage, others have a huge staff of armed and trained security forces, prisons, courts and complete freedom of action within the framework of the laws. Yes, in this case it will be difficult to influence justice. But what will prevent the newly created service from completely seizing power, given that the army in this world is already practically absent as unnecessary?

The author did not ignore the traditional theme of a computer scientist who finds himself in the world of magic. Moreover, traditionally for such cases, despite the fairly high development of local magical technologies, a hacker from our world quickly turns everything upside down. He hacks any local security, plays on the stock exchange and generally becomes an indispensable specialist for local security forces.

But the description of the life of a mercenary in our world is clearly not very interesting to the author - the events taking place there are mentioned only in passing, and at the first opportunity the mercenary returns to her home world, where she begins vigorous activity. But much attention is paid to local customs, holidays, traditions, and of course cooking. Moreover, the difference in the local mentality is well shown, especially with regard to the development of romantic relationships. The locals, of course, are not exactly puritans, but they pay much more attention to the issue of courtship.

In general, despite its peculiarities, the world of magic turns out to be much simpler and kinder than ours. After all, along with local oligarchs, here you can meet real fans of their business, and they occupy far from ordinary positions. And thanks to their efforts, many things happen that are simply impossible in our cynical world.

The detective plot and constant active actions do not let you get bored, especially since you are simply interested in what the true reasons for what is happening are. But, unlike previous books, the author does not explain everything at the end of the book. This time it’s the other way around – the book ends right at the main denouement of the plot. And the true reasons for what is happening and how the heroes will solve the emerging crisis can only be found out in the next book
