In such books, magicians do not just cast spells and a miracle happens. Often a magic system is built not just on a standard combination of a magician who has magical abilities and casts spells until he gets tired. In well-written magical worlds, all magicians have a limited supply of magical powers (mana, prana, or simply vital energy). Spells are subject to a complex system of restrictions and depend not only on the strength of the magician but also on other factors.
Alternative magical directions can often be described - spirit spells, alchemy, demonic and divine energies, technomagic, etc. Moreover, they can either be the only option for a given world or coexist with other methods of magic.
Everything is subject to strict laws, and the author tries not to break them. Yes, if the hero is the “chosen one,” then very often he has abilities that give him an advantage. But these abilities are explained in the constructed system and are not something beyond its boundaries. The hero develops and can become stronger than his opponents, but in accordance with the laws of the world, and not simply because of the author’s desire to give him an ability that no one else has.
On the one hand, this requires attention to detail and does not allow the heroes to work miracles without any restrictions. But at the same time, such books leave a much better impression, because the world becomes more alive and complete.
