Inquisition

Inquisition

Fantasy books often have a medieval theme, and the Inquisition is a common feature of this era. In a world where magic exists, there may be a church similar to Christianity that employs priests who fight evil with fire and sword.

While the real-world Inquisition fought against dissent, in a fantasy world, witches can pose a real danger to ordinary people, and heretics may worship real demons and make bloody sacrifices. Although the Inquisition is rarely liked in the fantasy world, they have the right to judge others and often carry out the sentence themselves. Inquisitors are usually portrayed as tough and unyielding, with high resistance to magic and the ability to confront witches and other divine cults.

The combat system of inquisitors is built on faith and willpower, rather than classical magic. They manifest divine powers, but these powers come with many restrictions associated with the depth of their faith, often of a moral nature. Inquisitors usually use crushing weapons in close combat to avoid bloodshed.

In a book's plot, the Inquisition can play a positive or negative role. If there is real evil to fight, the Inquisition will act on the side of good, but their methods may not be appreciated by everyone. There is usually a rigid hierarchy within the Inquisition, and high-ranking priests may engage in power struggles, weaving intrigues and complex multi-move combinations.

Sometimes, the Inquisition is portrayed as opponents of progress, not recognizing new technologies, magic, and any undertones in the confrontation with evil. They destroy anything that does not conform to religious dogmas, regardless of whether it is good or evil for ordinary people. In this case, the main characters defending good may be persecuted by the Inquisition.

The author's portrayal of the Inquisition, whether as real fighters against evil or ossified religious fanatics, depends on their professionalism and the reader’s personal opinion. Nonetheless, the Inquisition is a significant part of the fantasy world, and their capabilities can be a valuable addition to the usual combat and magical powers.
