The basis of most science fiction or fantasy books lies in the struggle between good and evil. The hero usually takes the side of good and fights against the manifestations of evil. However, it should be remembered that the concept of good and evil is subjective and can vary from person to person. What one person considers to be evil, another may consider to be normal or at least acceptable. Heroes often have both good and evil sides, and their actions cannot always be classified as clearly good or evil.
Some authors prefer to emphasize the multifaceted manifestations of good and evil, while others prefer to make a clear division and determine that everyone belongs to one side or the other. This simplification is often found in heroic fantasy, where a good hero fights powerful evil and its manifestations. Belonging to the "right" or "wrong" race, behavior, or even the external appearance can determine the side that a character is on.
In books that have a clear division between good and evil, characters are rarely given the opportunity to change sides or even return to neutral behavior. Evil characters are often portrayed as being evil by nature or by choice, making it impossible to convince or re-educate them.
This division between good and evil often extends to the main characters and their antagonists. The plot's confrontation usually takes place against the backdrop of the world's routine life, where ordinary people are not interested in the causes of conflicts and lead their own lives. They only become involved if they are direct participants and must choose a side.
In combat fiction, characters usually have no time to choose sides or neutrality. There is an enemy who wants to kill them, and there are allies with whom they fight against the enemy. Constantly developing active actions leave no time for analysis.
A clear division into good and evil is a simplification, but it can become an advantage if it is logically justified by the plot and does not harm the integrity of the book.
